Our Story

About the Mozart Philharmonic Orchestra

A commitment to orchestral excellence, rooted in the great European tradition and shaped by Sydney's finest music educators.

Born from a Love of the Orchestral Tradition

The Mozart Philharmonic Orchestra was established by a team of education experts and internationally celebrated musicians with a clear vision: to offer young musicians in Sydney a training environment of true conservatorium quality, built not on compromise but on the highest professional standard.

Named in honour of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart — whose prodigious talent, extraordinary discipline, and boundless musical imagination continue to inspire performers across the world — the MPO embodies everything that great music education should be. It is rigorous yet joyful, demanding yet deeply supportive, rooted in tradition yet alive to the full breadth of the orchestral repertoire.

Today, the Mozart Philharmonic Orchestra is home to some of the most talented young musicians in New South Wales, united by a shared commitment to the art of ensemble performance and guided by our world-class faculty.

"Music education of the highest order is not a privilege for the few — it is the responsibility of those who know what music can do to a young life."

Our Founding Principle

Our Academy

The Academy is a distinguished institution established by education experts and celebrated Australian and international musicians. We offer music lessons for all ages across a vast array of instruments, underpinned by a philosophy of performance-based education: recitals, showcases, and ensemble work are built into every student's learning cycle as a core requirement, not an optional extra.

Our outcomes speak for themselves. Ninety-seven per cent of our students achieve Band 6 in HSC Music. Ninety-one per cent receive Distinction in AMEB examinations. More than ten students have been admitted to the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. Over $7.2 million in New South Wales private school scholarships have been awarded to our students. The Mozart Philharmonic Orchestra is the natural home of this exceptional community's most committed young ensemble players.

Our Vision & Values

Every decision made within the Mozart Philharmonic Orchestra — from repertoire selection to the structure of each rehearsal — flows from three foundational commitments.

Excellence Without Compromise

We hold every student to the standard of a professional ensemble. This is not about pressure — it is about respect. When a teacher demands more of a student, they are communicating a belief in that student's capacity to achieve it. Excellence is our default expectation, and it produces musicians who surprise themselves.

Performance as the Measure of Growth

Rehearsals exist to prepare students for the stage. The concert — not the exam, not the certificate — is where musical growth becomes real. MPO students perform regularly in public venues, at the annual SIMFA festival, and in collaborative events with visiting artists. This performing culture shapes musicians of confidence and poise.

Community and Mutual Aspiration

An orchestra is, by nature, a community. Within MPO, students learn that their individual contribution shapes the ensemble's collective voice. This awareness — that one's own standard of preparation directly affects those around them — builds not only musical discipline but character, respect, and genuine artistic partnership.

Mr Ilya Isakovich serves as Musical Director of the Mozart Philharmonic Orchestra and Head of Strings at the Academy. A violinist of international standing, Mr Isakovich brings to the MPO podium a rare combination of elite performance experience, deep pedagogical insight, and an uncompromising commitment to ensemble standards.

Trained at a leading European conservatorium and with a distinguished career spanning orchestral leadership, solo performance, and teaching at the highest levels of the Australian music education system, Mr Isakovich has developed a conducting approach that is both technically rigorous and musically inspiring. Under his direction, the MPO has established itself as one of Sydney's most ambitious and respected youth ensembles.

As Head of Strings at the Academy, Mr Isakovich brings to the orchestra the full resources of our exceptional string faculty — ensuring that every section is shaped by the same professional standard that distinguishes the Sydney Conservatorium tradition. His vision for the MPO is of an ensemble that does not merely play the great works of the orchestral canon, but truly understands and inhabits them.

What Students Gain

Membership in the Mozart Philharmonic Orchestra develops students across dimensions that no individual lesson can achieve alone.

Ensemble Listening

The skill of listening while playing — tracking the conductor, matching intonation, blending tone — is one only an orchestra can teach. MPO students develop this instinct to a professional level.

Discipline and Preparation

Students learn quickly that an orchestra is only as strong as its least-prepared member. This accountability — to peers, to the music, to the audience — instils habits of disciplined, consistent practice.

Confidence on Stage

Regular public performances — across a range of venues and formats — build the performing confidence that distinguishes musicians who are truly stage-ready from those who have only ever rehearsed.

Repertoire Breadth

From Baroque concerti to Romantic symphonies to contemporary Australian works, MPO students develop an intimate familiarity with the orchestral canon that forms the foundation of any serious musical career.

Competition Preparation

Through the annual Sydney International Music and Fine Arts Festival and targeted AMEB preparation, MPO students are equipped to excel in the most demanding competitive and examination environments.

Lifelong Musicianship

Beyond technique and performance, MPO students develop a relationship with music that transcends the programme itself — a deep, personal connection to the orchestral art form that will enrich every decade of their lives.
